Life’s A Beach
Well Stu I’ll tell you, surfing’s not a sport, it’s a way of life, it’s no hobby. It’s a way of looking at that wave and saying, “Hey bud, let’s party!”
Almost everything in fashion is a reinvention of some other thing in fashion.  We beg, borrow, and steal from all walks of life and all cultures.  Women borrow from men.  Men borrow from women.  Goths borrow from glamour, and celebrities borrow from surfers. “Surfer Strands,” otherwise known as “ombre,” have become the hottest celebrity hair trend since the Rachel.  As we approach summer, one of the most natural places to look to for everyday style inspiration is surf culture.

For those who surf, it’s a way of life.  A religion that celebrates going toe-to-toe with Mother Nature, while at the same time taking things one wave at a time.  Surfers have a gazillion little sub-cultures that divide them (longboarding vs. shortboardingbodysurfing vs. bodyboarding), which are unidentifiable to outsiders, but a unifying theme among them tends to be their appearance:  Toned, golden bodies.  Bathing suits.  Sun-bleached locks.  Of course, we all long to have an endless summer, but for those of us who have day jobs and can’t traverse the globe in search of the gnarliest wave, sometimes the only way to scratch that itch is with the stuff we wear.

In the 60s, it was bikinis galore.  Since then, we’ve seen the rise (and sometimes fall) in popularity of Hawaiian shirts, huarache sandals, Jams, and Uggs.  Today, surfing’s influence can be seen in our mismatched bikini top and bottoms, the fringe trend of cheeky Brazilian swimsuit bottoms that flaunt our rears, and the ubiquitous ombre locks of those going for the perfect beach hair of Sally Fitzgibbons, currently the No. 1 professional female surfer in the world.

While trends come and go, one thing is for certain: as long as people keep riding the waves, surf culture will continue to influence our summer fashion.

Here are some tips to jump-start your endless summer:

Let your hair down.  Get natural beach waves that you can wear to the office.
